Robert Nesta Marley (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981) was a Jamaican singer, songwriter, and musician who became a global cultural icon as the primary pioneer of reggae music. Early Life: Born in Nine Mile, Jamaica, to a Black Jamaican mother and a white English father. He moved as a teenager to Trenchtown, a poor neighborhood in Kingston, where he immersed himself in music. Musical Rise: In 1963, he co-founded The Wailers alongside Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The group evolved from ska and rocksteady into reggae, breaking into international stardom in the 1970s with hits like "No Woman, No Cry," "Get Up, Stand Up," and "I Shot the Sheriff". Rastafari & Activism: Embracing the Rastafari faith in the mid-1960s, Marley infused his songs with spiritual themes, pan-Africanism, and calls for peace and social justice. He became a unifying political figure in Jamaica, famously headlining the 1978 One Love Peace Concert. Passing: Marley died of acral lentiginous melanoma (a form of skin cancer) in 1981 at age 36. His posthumous compilation album, Legend (1984), became the best-selling reggae album of all time. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
